Coimbra
With thel Mondego river to Portugal's oldest university to the castles and artwork,
Coimbra is a wondeful and beautiful city. Coimbra was taken back from the Moors in 878,
only to be lost again to them in a century later. Ferdinand the Great of Castile finally freed
the city in 1064. The first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, moved his capital here,
an honour it maintained until 1256.
