The Arc de Triomphe

Commissioned in 1806 by Napoleon, shortly after his
victory at Austerlitz, the Arc was finished in 1836. There
are four huge relief sculptures at the base, and around the
top are engraved the names of major victories won
during the Revolutionay and Napoleonic periods. The names
of less important victories, including 558 generals, are
found on the inside walls.

The Arc stands at the end of the Avenue des
Champs Élysées and in the center of the Place de l'Étoile,
formed by the intersection of 12 radiating streets.
